Daying Formation

Daying Fm

Period:
Neogene

Age Interval:
Late Miocene (Tortonian to Messinian), N1

Province:
Henan

Type Locality and Naming

The type section is located near the Mapo village (E112°31′, N34°18′), about 3 km southwest to the Neibu town, Ruyang County, Henan Province (BGMRH(Hennan)P, 1997). Its name is firstly used by the Henan Geological Survey Team in 1964 in its unpublished reports. The Daying Fm used by BGMRH(Hennan)P (1989, 1997) is actually a series of Jurassic basalts, completely different from the “Daying Fm” used by Zheng et al. (1999). The Neogene “Daying Fm Zheng et al., 1999” should be abandoned, and the Neibu Fm is an appropriate substitute and should be revived, as suggested by Gao et al. (2014a).

Synonym: Neibu Fm

Lithology and Thickness

It is a series of continental basal volcanic-clastic rocks. Lower part is characterized by deep purplish-grey pyroxene olivine basalts with partial bottom containing purplish-red or greyish-white gravels; Middle part consists of red claystones, gravels, or pyroclastic rocks; Upper part is formed by deep grey pyroxene olivine basalts. It contains fossil mammals. Its thickness is in range of 10~118 m.

Lithology Pattern:
Volcanics

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

No underlying rocks could be seen in the type section. In other regions, this formation is in disconformable contact with the underlying Luoyang Fm or unconformably contacts with the underlying Chenzhaigou Fm or Lower Tertiary sediments.

Upper contact

In the type section, the Daying Fm unconformably contacts with the overlain Middle Pleistocene brownish-red clays.

Regional extent

The formation is distributed to area of Ruyang, Yichuan, Ruzhou, and Songxian, Henan Province.
